First, what kind of boat do you need?
There is not one boat to suit all occasions!
Here are a few things to consider:
Center Console for fishing
Benefits
It's great for offshore fishing, and for small groups
Drawbacks
It is not comfortable for cruising around
Not idea for water sports
Can't fit very many people
Not ideal for shallow areas such as the intracoastal
Pontoon Boat
Benefits
It's great for larger groups and bay fishing
Drawbacks
Not great for going into the gulf
Can't go very fast
Not ideal for for water sports
Deck Boat
Benefits
It's great for larger groups and bay fishing

Then, how much is owning a boat going to cost?

Average price of a 20' new boat $30,000
Maintenance of Electronics (VHS Radio, CD Player, speakers) = $300
Mechanical maintenance (Oil changes 1 time per season) = $5,000
Repair to esthetics (wear & tear on seats, cup holders, etc.) = $2,500
Liability Insurance ($600 per year) = $3,000
Hull maintenance (bottom paint, cracks, cleaning) = $3,000
Storage ($300 per month) = $18,000
Towing Insurance = $500
Total Basic Expenses = $ 32,300
At the end of 5 years your boat is probably worth half or around $15,000 if you take into account depreciation of around $3000 each year.
So, 5 years of boating cost you a minimum of $ 47,300!!!
This doesn't include interest if you are borrowing to buy your boat.
Even if you can pay cash, perhaps that money could be invested more wisely elsewhere?
